Ocean Ridge Wallpaper Removal and Wall Prep

The short answer

We remove old wallpaper and borders from Ocean Ridge homes, clean off the glue, deal with any mildew we uncover, and repair the drywall or plaster so it is smooth and ready for paint or new paper.

Maybe you bought an Ocean Ridge house with a 1990s seashell border in the guest bath, or a kitchen lined in a vinyl that is starting to peel at the seams. Either way, getting old wallpaper off cleanly takes more than a putty knife and a spray bottle. WallEdge Installation is about two miles away in Boynton Beach, and we take wallpaper down in homes across Ocean Ridge, then repair and seal the walls so they are ready for whatever comes next.

Signs it is time for the old paper to go

Some homeowners remove wallpaper simply because tastes change. Others notice problems that call for removal sooner. Common signs include:

  • Seams that have opened and curled, often in bathrooms or near exterior doors.
  • Bubbles or soft spots that suggest moisture behind the paper.
  • Dark spotting or a musty smell, which may point to mildew on the wall surface.
  • Faded or yellowed sections where sun hits through windows.
  • Borders at the ceiling line that date the room and pull away at the ends.

Why coastal walls can be tricky

Ocean Ridge sits right on the water, and that shows up behind wallpaper. Exterior walls, especially concrete block ones, can collect condensation where cool, air-conditioned interior air meets warm, humid outside air. Over years, that moisture can leave mildew or staining under vinyl papers, which do not let the wall breathe well.

Adhesive also ages differently here. Some old pastes break down and release easily, while others have hardened against the wall. Older homes may have paper hung straight onto drywall without primer, so the glue has bonded with the drywall's paper face. Removal in that case is a slow, careful job to avoid tearing the surface.

Our removal process, in order

We start by protecting the room: furniture moved or covered, floors protected with waterproof sheeting, electrical outlets and switches shut off and taped. Then we identify the paper type with a small test area.

Peelable vinyl is pulled off dry, leaving the backing. The backing and any non-peelable papers are soaked with warm water and a removal solution, scored gently if needed, and scraped once the glue softens. Steam is reserved for heavy, layered or painted-over paper.

Once the paper is off, the walls are washed to remove all remaining adhesive. This step is easy to skip and causes many of the paint problems people see later, like crazing, poor adhesion or blotchy sheen.

After removal: repair, treat and seal

If we find mildew, we clean and treat it and allow the area to dry. Where the drywall's face paper was torn, we apply a sealing primer that locks down loose fibers, then skim coat and sand smooth. Larger gouges or damaged corners are repaired as part of the same visit when possible.

The final coat depends on your plans. For paint, we finish with a standard primer. For new wallpaper, we use a wallcovering primer that improves adhesion and makes future removal easier. Plenty of clients have us strip and rehang in one project.

Should you try it yourself?

Plenty of homeowners attempt removal on their own, and for a small border or a modern peelable paper it can go fine. The trouble usually starts with older papers bonded directly to drywall, multiple layers, or paper that has been painted over. Aggressive scraping gouges the surface, oversoaking softens it, and leftover glue shows up later as cracked or peeling paint.

If you start a room and find the paper fighting you, stop before the damage spreads. We can pick up where you left off, assess any torn areas, and finish the removal and repairs so the wall is still salvageable without replacing drywall.

Scheduling and service area

A small bathroom or a border-only job may take a day; larger rooms or multiple layers take longer, and humid summer weather can slow drying between steps. We serve Ocean Ridge plus Briny Breezes, Manalapan, Hypoluxo, Gulf Stream and Lantana.

FAQ

Common questions

Don’t see your question? Call (561) 834-7669 and we’ll talk it through.

Can you remove just a wallpaper border?

Yes. Borders are a common request. We remove the border and its adhesive and patch any paint damage left behind.

Is it safe to remove wallpaper from an older home?

Generally yes, but some older homes have layers of paint that may contain lead. If your home is older, testing before scraping or sanding is a sensible precaution.

What do you do if mildew is under the wallpaper?

We clean and treat the surface, allow it to dry, and point out any signs of an active leak that should be repaired first.

Will my walls need repairs after removal?

Often a little. Minor surface tears and residue are common, and we handle skim coating and priming as part of the job.

Can you hang new wallpaper right after removing the old?

Yes, once the walls are repaired, dry and primed. That can happen in the same project.

Planning a wallpaper project?

Tell us about the room, the paper you have in mind and the condition of the walls. We will set up a visit to measure and walk you through the scope.
