Lake Clarke Shores Wallpaper Hanging, Removal and Wall Prep

The short answer

WallEdge Installation works in Lake Clarke Shores, roughly 8 miles north of Boynton Beach. We remove old wallpaper, repair and prime walls, and install new wallcoverings, murals and accent walls suited to humid Florida homes.

Lake Clarke Shores is a residential town in central Palm Beach County, around 8 miles north of the WallEdge Installation base in Boynton Beach. Most of the work we do here is in single-family houses, many of them ranch-style homes built of concrete block, where owners are updating rooms one at a time. That kind of house rewards patience. Walls can have decades of paint, plaster patches and the ghost outlines of old paper, and the finish you get from new wallcovering depends heavily on what happens before the first strip is hung.

Updating an older ranch home

Ranch houses tend to have long, low walls, open living and dining areas and hallways that connect several bedrooms. Those layouts are great for wallpaper because they offer wide, uninterrupted surfaces. They can also expose problems, since a long wall shows any waviness in the plaster or any change in color between rolls.

Before we commit to a pattern, we walk the room with a light held flat against the wall to show where the surface dips. Some homeowners are surprised how much an old wall moves. We then talk about whether a skim coat makes sense, or whether a heavier, textured paper such as grasscloth or a woven vinyl will hide minor flaws better than a thin, glossy print.

How we take old paper down without wrecking the wall

Removal is often the slowest part of a Lake Clarke Shores job, and rushing it creates repair work. Our sequence looks like this:

  • Test a corner to learn whether the paper is strippable, peelable or fully bonded
  • Peel any dry top layer that will come away cleanly
  • Score painted or coated surfaces so moisture can reach the paste underneath
  • Apply warm water and remover in sections and give it time to soften
  • Lift the backing with wide scrapers held at a low angle
  • Wash the wall of leftover adhesive, which can otherwise bleed through new paint or paper
  • Seal any torn drywall paper with a primer made for that purpose before patching

Humidity, AC and timing

Central Palm Beach County shares the same tropical pattern as the rest of South Florida. Summers, from May through October, are wet and muggy with regular afternoon storms. Winters are warmer and drier, though not truly dry. Inside a home, the AC does most of the work of keeping walls stable, which is why we ask clients to leave it on at a normal setting during and after installation.

Concrete block exterior walls can stay damp for a while after heavy rain, especially if a gutter overflows or a window seal has failed. We check those walls with a moisture meter and wait if needed. Hurricane season, June 1 through November 30, is another reason to stay flexible on dates.

What Lake Clarke Shores clients usually choose

There is no single local style, but some requests come up often. Accent walls are a popular first step for people who want to try pattern without committing a whole room. Murals work well in family rooms with one long wall. Ceiling wallpaper adds interest to a plain flat ceiling in a dining room or bedroom. In kitchens, laundry rooms and kids' bathrooms, vinyl wallcovering stands up to cleaning. Peel and stick is useful for a nursery or a closet interior. For home-based offices and small businesses in the area, we also install commercial-grade wallcoverings.

FAQ

Common questions

Don’t see your question? Call (561) 834-7669 and we’ll talk it through.

Can textured wallpaper hide an uneven plaster wall?

Heavier textured papers and grasscloth hide minor flaws better than thin, glossy prints. Significant dips or cracks still need repair or a skim coat first.

How do you know if my old wallpaper will come off easily?

We test a small corner. That tells us whether the paper is strippable, peelable or fully bonded and how much soaking and scoring it will need.

Why does leftover paste have to be washed off?

Dried adhesive left on the wall can cause new paint to crack or new paper to bond poorly, so we clean it off before priming.

Do you install wallpaper on ceilings in Lake Clarke Shores homes?

Yes. Ceiling paper is a good way to add character to a plain flat ceiling in a bedroom, den or dining room.

Is it a problem that my exterior walls are concrete block?

Not at all, but block can hold moisture after storms. We check moisture levels and wait until the wall is dry enough before hanging paper.

Planning a wallpaper project?

Tell us about the room, the paper you have in mind and the condition of the walls. We will set up a visit to measure and walk you through the scope.
