Gulf Stream Wallpaper Removal and Wall Repair

The short answer

We test the paper, choose dry stripping, soaking or steam, protect floors and trim, then wash, repair and prime the walls. Gulf Stream homes end up with clean surfaces ready for paint or new paper.

Taking down wallpaper in a coastal home is rarely as simple as pulling a corner. Years of humid air can make paste set harder in some spots and let go in others, and plaster or drywall beneath may need attention once the paper is off. WallEdge Installation removes old wallpaper for Gulf Stream homeowners, working from our base in Boynton Beach about 3 miles north. We strip carefully, clean off the residue, repair what needs fixing and leave you with walls that are ready for paint or a fresh wallcovering.

Signs it is time for the old paper to go

Some homeowners remove wallpaper because the style feels dated. Others have a more urgent reason. In coastal houses, peeling seams, brown spots, bubbles and a musty smell can point to moisture behind the paper, and those walls should be opened up and looked at.

Removing paper is also the first step before a renovation, a new design scheme or getting a home ready to list. Painting over old paper may look acceptable for a while, but seams and edges tend to show through, and humidity can cause the paper underneath to loosen and lift the paint with it.

  • Seams curling or lifting at the top or bottom
  • Discoloration or dark spots that may signal mildew
  • Bubbles or soft areas under the surface
  • Paper that has been painted over and is now cracking

Choosing the right removal method

We test a small spot first. Modern strippable papers often come off dry in full sheets. Vinyls usually peel to their backing, which then needs soaking. Older papers, multiple layers and painted-over paper respond to steam or a warm solution after gentle scoring.

Plaster walls, found in some older coastal houses, handle moisture differently from drywall. Plaster tolerates soaking well, while drywall face paper can tear if it gets too wet or is scraped hard. We adjust our tools and water use for the surface under the paper.

Protecting a finished home

Gulf Stream interiors frequently have stone or wood flooring, painted millwork and built-ins. Removal can be messy, so we lay plastic and absorbent cloths, tape off trim and cabinetry, and cover nearby furniture. Electrical covers are removed and openings taped. Wet scraps are bagged as we go.

We keep the home's air conditioning running during and after removal. Soaked walls dry more slowly in humid air, and we do not seal or prime until the surface has dried completely. Trapping moisture under new paint or paper invites mildew.

Repair, clean and prime

Once the paper is gone, adhesive residue is washed off with warm water until the wall no longer feels tacky. Leftover paste can crack paint and cause new wallpaper to blister.

Then we repair. Torn drywall face paper is sealed with a stain-blocking primer before any joint compound goes on, so it does not bubble. Dents, gouges and old anchor holes are filled and sanded smooth. If removal reveals water staining or soft spots, we show you before going further, since the source of the moisture needs to be found and fixed. The last step is primer: a paint primer if you are painting, or a wallpaper primer if new paper is next.

Planning what comes next

Many clients book removal and new wallpaper together, which shortens the time walls sit bare. Others remove paper ahead of a painter. Either way, we coordinate the timing with you. Our removal service also covers Briny Breezes, Delray Beach, Ocean Ridge, Hypoluxo and Manalapan.

If you plan to paint, ask your painter which primer they prefer so we can apply a compatible one. If new wallpaper is next, a wallpaper primer gives the new paper better slip during hanging and makes the next removal, whenever it comes, much easier. Either way, we leave the room clean, the furniture back in place, and the walls dry and ready.

Timing can matter on the coast. Removal during the drier months from November into April lets soaked walls dry faster, which shortens the wait before repairs and priming. Summer jobs are still very doable; they simply need more drying time and steady air conditioning, and we build that into the schedule.
