The short answer
An accent wall in Gulf Stream should be chosen with sun, salt air and humidity in mind. WallEdge Installation helps pick the wall and paper, prepares the surface, and installs it with balanced, matched seams.
Gulf Stream is a small coastal town just 3 miles south of our Boynton Beach shop, tucked between the ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. Homes close to the water deal with bright reflected light, salt in the air and long stretches of humid weather, and all three affect how a feature wall should be planned. WallEdge Installation designs and hangs single-wall wallpaper accents here with those coastal conditions in mind, so the wall you choose still looks sharp when the next hurricane season rolls around.
Light off the water changes how patterns read
Coastal rooms often get strong light bouncing off water, pools and pale exterior walls. A pattern that looks subtle in a showroom can wash out on a sunny wall, while a dark paper may look nearly black on the side of the room that never sees direct sun. Before choosing, hold a sample against each candidate wall in the morning and again in late afternoon.
Sun also fades some inks and natural fibers. Walls that take direct light through big glass doors do better with fade-resistant vinyls or nonwovens printed with stable inks. Walls that stay shaded are the place for delicate metallics, silks or hand-printed designs.
Where a feature wall works in a coastal house
Many waterside homes are built around views. The accent should support the view, not compete with it. We usually suggest a wall perpendicular to the windows or opposite them, so the pattern frames the room while the glass still does the talking.
- Behind a bed in a primary suite, facing the water
- A dining room end wall, lit by an overhead fixture in the evening
- A wet bar or butler's pantry wall in a durable vinyl
- A stair landing or entry wall that greets guests
- A study or library wall framed by built-in shelving
Protecting the wall from salt and moisture
Salt air does its real damage on the exterior, but it also finds its way inside every time doors open to a patio or pool deck. Homes near the ocean that are closed up for part of the year can get musty if the air conditioning is set too high or turned off. Wallpaper responds badly to that cycle of damp and dry.
We check walls with a moisture meter, especially exterior concrete block walls and those beside sliding doors, and we look for old water stains near window corners. A breathable nonwoven paper and a mildew-resistant adhesive are sensible choices for houses that may sit empty in summer. We also recommend keeping the thermostat at a reasonable setting and a dehumidifier running if the home is a seasonal residence.
Our installation approach
We patch and sand the wall, prime with a wallpaper-specific primer, and mark a plumb line from the center of the focal point outward. Starting at center keeps the pattern symmetrical on both sides, which matters on a wall that frames a bed, a fireplace or artwork. Edges at the ceiling and baseboard are trimmed straight with fresh blades, and outlets are cut precisely.
Upscale coastal interiors often include wainscoting, picture rail or crown molding. Paper above a chair rail or inside panel molding needs extra care at every cut, and we handle these details slowly rather than rushing through them. Paste is wiped off trim right away so it does not dry glossy on painted woodwork.
If your design calls for an unusual material such as cork, mica, silk or a hand-screened paper, send us the product information in advance so we can confirm the adhesive and technique the maker requires.
Nearby coastal towns
The same planning applies along the shoreline. We install accent walls for homeowners in Briny Breezes, Delray Beach, Ocean Ridge, Hypoluxo and Manalapan as well as Gulf Stream.
To get started, send a few photos of the room taken from the doorway and from your usual seat, plus a link to any paper you are considering. We will suggest which wall makes the strongest statement, estimate how many rolls the pattern repeat requires, and set a visit to measure. Short drives from Boynton Beach make it easy to stop by for a quick look at samples taped on the wall before you commit to an order.
