The short answer
Grasscloth suits calm, climate-controlled rooms in South Palm Beach homes and condos. We confirm the room is a good fit, prepare a smooth, tinted-primed wall, and hang panels in a considered order so the natural shading looks balanced.
A grasscloth wall brings warmth to rooms that might otherwise feel all glass, tile and white paint, which describes plenty of oceanfront condos. In South Palm Beach, roughly five miles northeast of our Boynton Beach location, we install woven natural wallcoverings in living rooms, dens, bedrooms and dining areas. Grasscloth asks for more planning than ordinary wallpaper, from where it goes to how each panel is handled, and WallEdge Installation builds that planning into every job.
Is your room a good candidate?
Grasscloth thrives where temperature and humidity stay steady and the wall rarely gets touched or splashed. Run through a quick checklist before you fall in love with a sample:
- The room is air-conditioned consistently, including when you are away.
- The wall is not next to a shower, tub, sink or cooktop.
- The balcony or patio door nearby is not left open for hours on humid days.
- The wall does not get rubbed by chairs, kids or pets regularly.
- You are comfortable with visible seams and color variation between panels.
- Strong afternoon sun is filtered by shades or window film, or you are choosing an undyed colorway that fades gracefully.
Understanding the material you are buying
The term grasscloth covers a family of woven products. Sisal has a fine, regular weave and a fairly uniform look. Jute is coarser and more rustic. Arrowroot and seagrass have broader, flatter strands and pronounced texture. Paperweave, made from twisted paper strands, is more consistent and often more affordable. Each is laminated to a paper backing that takes the adhesive.
Because these are natural products, the manufacturer often prints a disclaimer about shading, visible seams and color variation. We mention this because unmet expectations about shading are where most grasscloth regrets begin. Seeing a large sample in your room before ordering, and buying all rolls from the same run, are simple steps that reduce surprises.
How the installation differs in a condo
Grasscloth rolls are usually wider and heavier than standard wallpaper, and many buildings in South Palm Beach have rules about when contractors can use the elevator and how materials move through common areas. We coordinate with management, bring materials up in one trip where possible, and set up a clean pasting station in the unit, away from foot traffic, so nothing gets onto the fiber face.
Condo walls are often drywall over concrete. We make sure they are flat, dry and sealed with a primer tinted to the grasscloth's background color. That tint matters: grasscloth seams can show a slight gap as the material dries, and a matching base color hides it.
Hanging, trimming and finishing
We inspect and number the panels, then decide whether to reverse alternate drops based on the product and how the edges shade. Adhesive goes on the back only, with care at the edges. Each drop is smoothed with a soft brush, never pressed with a hard tool that could crush the weave. Cuts at the ceiling, baseboard, windows and outlets are made with fresh blades to keep fibers from fraying or pulling.
Once the wall is complete, we look at it from the room's main viewing angles and in both natural and artificial light. Fine adjustments are made while the adhesive is still workable.
Faux grasscloth for the rooms that cannot take the real thing
Kitchens, full baths and laundry closets in a beachside unit are hard on natural fiber, but owners often want the same woven look carried through the home. Textured vinyl versions mimic sisal, raffia and seagrass closely enough that most visitors never notice the difference, and they can be wiped clean after a splash. Hanging them is closer to a standard vinyl job, with matched or random seams depending on the product, so they also tend to go up faster than true grasscloth.
Ongoing care
Dust lightly with a soft brush attachment every few months. Keep liquids away, and blot rather than rub if something does get on the wall. If you close the unit for the hot season, leave the air conditioning on at a moderate setting to protect the fibers from the humid months between May and October. We also install grasscloth in Lantana, Manalapan, Hypoluxo, Lake Worth Beach and Atlantis.
