Grasscloth Installation in Briny Breezes

The short answer

Real grasscloth can work in Briny Breezes homes when it goes in a conditioned, dry room on a sealed wall. In damp or high-traffic spots we often suggest a vinyl grasscloth look that holds up better to coastal moisture.

Grasscloth suits a seaside setting naturally. Its woven reeds and grasses echo dune grass, rope and driftwood, and the texture softens the hard lines of a small room. Briny Breezes, about two miles southeast of WallEdge Installation in Boynton Beach, is about as close to the ocean as a Palm Beach County home can get, and that proximity shapes how we recommend, prepare and install natural fiber here. The goal is the relaxed coastal look without stains, rippling or seams that pull apart.

Real fiber or a lookalike?

This is the first conversation we have with any Briny Breezes homeowner considering grasscloth. Genuine natural fiber has depth and irregularity that a printed copy cannot fully match. It also absorbs moisture, shows water marks and fades in direct sun. Vinyl and non-woven grasscloth alternatives have an embossed or printed texture, shrug off humidity and wipe clean. Many people use both: real grasscloth in a bedroom or den, and a lookalike in the hallway, kitchen nook or powder room.

We bring samples of each and hold them against your wall in daylight. With the ocean so close, light here is bright and slightly blue, and fiber colors can look cooler than they did in the showroom.

  • Real grasscloth: bedrooms, dens and dining areas that stay cool and dry
  • Vinyl lookalike: entries, hallways, kitchens and bathrooms
  • Either option: living rooms, depending on sun exposure and use

Protecting fiber from humidity

Grasscloth reacts to moisture in two ways. The fibers swell and relax, which can create gentle waves across a panel, and water that reaches the face leaves marks that will not wash out. In a coastal town where the air is damp most of the year and summer storms roll in almost every afternoon, we take extra steps.

We meter the wall, seal it with a primer suited to natural wallcoverings, and ask that the room be air-conditioned steadily for a day before and several days after installation. If you leave the home empty for part of the year, setting the thermostat and a dehumidifier to keep humidity in check will help protect the fiber while you are away, especially during hurricane season from June through November.

Planning panels in a compact room

Small rooms have fewer walls, which means fewer places to hide shading differences between grasscloth panels. Before we cut, we unroll every bolt under good light, sort the panels by tone, and map which ones go on the wall people face most. Slightly darker or lighter panels get assigned to spots behind doors, inside closets or above cabinets. Reversing every other strip, when the manufacturer recommends it, also helps the color flow more evenly.

Openings deserve attention. Short walls between windows can end up with narrow slivers of grasscloth that make seams look crowded. We adjust the layout so each wall section gets panels of reasonable width.

Hanging technique

We roll clear, non-staining adhesive evenly onto the back of each panel and let it relax for a short time. On the wall, the panel is smoothed with a soft brush rather than a plastic smoother, which can crush or scratch fibers. Seams are butted together and pressed lightly. Edges at the ceiling and baseboard are cut with a sharp blade and a straightedge so the weave does not fray. Any paste that touches the face is blotted immediately with a dry sponge, never rubbed with water.

When you order, buy every roll from the same production lot and keep one extra bolt in a cool, dry closet. Grasscloth cannot be matched later from a different run, so that spare is your backup plan for a scuffed or stained panel. We will tell you the roll count once we have measured the walls.

FAQ

Common questions

Don’t see your question? Call (561) 834-7669 and we’ll talk it through.

Can I put real grasscloth in a beach-area home?

Yes, in rooms that stay air-conditioned and dry. We suggest a vinyl alternative for bathrooms, kitchens and walls near frequently opened doors.

Why do grasscloth panels look slightly different?

Natural fibers are dyed and woven in batches, so color and texture vary. Sorting panels before hanging keeps the variation even and attractive.

Does sunlight fade grasscloth?

Strong, direct sun can lighten natural fibers over time. Window film or sheer curtains on sun-facing walls slow fading.

How do I keep grasscloth clean near the beach?

Dust with a soft brush or vacuum attachment and keep sandy, wet hands away from it. Avoid liquids and cleaning sprays on the fiber.

Can grasscloth go over factory-finished panels?

Often, after we test the surface and apply a bonding primer. We check that panel seams will not show through the weave.

Planning a wallpaper project?

Tell us about the room, the paper you have in mind and the condition of the walls. We will set up a visit to measure and walk you through the scope.
