Lantana Wallpaper Removal and Wall Prep

The short answer

WallEdge Installation takes down old wallpaper in Lantana, FL, including borders, vinyl and painted-over paper. We remove the leftover adhesive, repair any drywall damage and prime the wall so it is ready for its next finish.

Peeling seams in a guest bath, a faded border running around a kitchen, or a whole bedroom covered in a pattern from another decade: in Lantana, many houses still carry wallpaper put up by earlier owners. Getting it off cleanly takes more than a putty knife and patience. WallEdge Installation removes old wallpaper in Lantana homes and condos across ZIP 33462, then cleans and repairs the walls so they are ready for paint or a fresh wallcovering. Our base in Boynton Beach is about 4 miles south, so we can usually start quickly.

Start with a test patch

Wallpaper removal goes better when you know what you are dealing with. Before working a whole room, we pick a hidden spot, often behind a door or a piece of furniture, and try to lift a corner of the paper.

If it pulls away cleanly in a full sheet, it is likely a strippable product, and the job is mostly about cleaning up adhesive. If only the top layer comes off, it is probably a vinyl paper with a paper backing left behind. If it tears into small bits, or the drywall's brown paper face starts coming with it, the paper was likely hung on an unprimed wall, and we slow down to protect the surface.

Tools and techniques for different papers

Once we understand the paper, we choose the method. The goal is always to remove it with as little damage to the wall as possible.

  • Strippable papers: lifted dry, then the wall is washed
  • Vinyl papers: the vinyl face is peeled off, then the backing is soaked and scraped
  • Traditional pasted papers: soaked with warm water and a remover solution in sections
  • Painted-over or multi-layer paper: steamed carefully, a section at a time
  • Borders: softened and removed along with the paper they were often hung over

After the paper: glue, damage and primer

Removing the paper is the visible part, but the work that decides how the wall will look later is the cleanup. Old paste leaves a thin film that can make paint crack, bubble or look blotchy. We wash it off thoroughly and check the wall by touch until it no longer feels slippery or tacky.

Where the drywall face has torn, we seal it with a primer designed to lock down exposed paper fibers, then skim coat and sand the area smooth. Any nail holes or dents that were hidden under the old paper are filled at the same time. Finally, the wall gets a primer suited to your next step, either paint or new wallpaper.

Moisture, mold and coastal homes

Lantana's coastal climate means walls deal with a lot of moisture over the years. In bathrooms, near exterior doors and on exterior concrete-block walls, wallpaper sometimes hides staining or damp spots. Wind-driven rain during summer storms and hurricane season, from June through November, can push water past older windows and doors.

When we remove paper and find dark stains, soft drywall or a musty smell, we stop and show you. Those spots may need a closer look before any new finish goes on. Covering moisture damage with fresh paint or wallpaper only hides the problem for a while.

Keeping the house livable during the work

Removal is a wet process, so we protect floors with drop cloths and plastic, cover outlets and switches, and move furniture away from the walls. Wet paper is bagged as we go instead of piling up.

Walls need to dry before primer goes on. In the humid wet season, that can take longer, so we keep the air conditioning running and may split the job across two visits. In the drier months, from November into April, drying is usually quicker.

FAQ

Common questions

Don’t see your question? Call (561) 834-7669 and we’ll talk it through.

Can you remove wallpaper that has been painted over?

Yes. Painted-over paper usually needs scoring and steam to let moisture reach the paste, and the process takes more time than unpainted paper.

Will my walls be ready to paint right away?

Once the walls are clean, repaired, dry and primed, they are ready for paint. Drying time depends on the season and how wet the removal was.

What if my walls get damaged during removal?

Some older papers pull the drywall surface with them. We seal and skim those areas so the finished wall is smooth.

Do you remove wallpaper in condos?

Yes. We follow building rules on work hours, debris disposal and access to common areas.

How long does removal take?

One small room is often done in a day. Larger rooms, several layers or significant wall repair can take longer.

Planning a wallpaper project?

Tell us about the room, the paper you have in mind and the condition of the walls. We will set up a visit to measure and walk you through the scope.
